This is the fourth installment in a new series where we highlight great can’t-miss routes around the world.

Killington, Vermont: New England in the fall is an explosion of color

Explore the northeast!

If you want a great fall ride while the leaves are changing, and before the snow blankets the hills and forests, Vermont is a great place to do it. This figure-eight loop (see route below) heads out of Brandon, VT, which is just three hours northwest of Boston.

Out of Brandon, it heads along the 73 before turning south toward Killington Ski Area and Coolidge State Forest, then along the Ottauquechee River toward Woodstock. It then points back north toward Bethel and the White River, Rochester, and Hancock before heading west along the 125. The route then heads due south through Branbury State Park and along Lake Dunmore before rolling back into Brandon.

The town of Brandon has been around since the 1770s and is the epitome of small-town New England. If you are looking for lunch halfway through this ride, Woodstock is a great place to sit down and relax for a while.
