This is the sixth installment in a new series where we highlight great can’t-miss routes around the world.
Austin, Texas: Marble Falls to Buchanan Lake Loop
Texas Hill Country: Great riding and better BBQ
The Texas Hill Country not only offers fantastic riding year round, but is also littered with awesome Bar-B-Que joints in almost every small town you come across. With the Colorado River dominating the geography, the views around every curve are pretty amazing.
This loop originates in Marble Falls, northwest of Austin. However, if you are starting your ride in downtown Austin, it never hurts to run north along Lake Travis on Lime Creek Road on your way to Marble Falls. From there, take the 1431 east then take a left on the 341 to Mormon Hill Road (340) toward Burnet. Then jump on the 241 south until you hit Park Road 4 S, which will take you through Longhorn Cavern State Park, and then into Inks Lake State Park along the Colorado River. Then meander along the shore of Buchanan Lake before flipping a U-turn and heading back South toward Oatmeal, and then south into Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Area. You can then either head back toward Marble Falls or head south on Cow Creek Road toward Lake Travis and Austin.
If you are looking for great Bar-B-Que in Marble Falls, check out Holy Smokes! BBQ & Catering (2704A Commerce St, Marble Falls, TX), or Peete Mesquite BBQ (2407 US Highway 281, Marble Falls, TX).
