This is the first installment in a new series where we highlight great can’t-miss routes around the world.
LA: Ultimate Malibu Sportbike Route
It doesn’t really matter if you’re a sportbike enthusiast, ADV rider, or on a bagger, the roads above Malibu, overlooking the Pacific ocean west of Los Angeles are as good as any in the world. Serpentine ribbons of asphalt wind up and down the natural canyons that flow from the hills to the beaches.
Great places to eat include: Neptune’s Net just west of Leo Carrillo State Beach, Malibu Seafood just west of Latigo Canyon, and The Reel Inn at the base of Topanga Canyon Road. All are motorcycle friendly and fair priced. Get gas at the base of Sunset Boulevard before heading out on Highway 1.
If you are fortunate enough to be able to ride these roads midweek, you will likely have them to yourself. Head out on a summer weekend, and expect a high volume of motorcyclists, bicyclists, and also the California Highway Patrol. A visit to the famous Rock Store on Mulholland Highway is in order if you haven’t been there, but don’t expect it to be open during the week.
