This is the 11th installment in a series where we highlight great can’t-miss routes around the world.
Miami, FL, US1 Miami to Key West
Bridge to Paradise
One of the most unique highways in America has to be Highway 1 from Key Largo to Key West south of Miami. This ride is more about the experience and sights than an amazing riding road. The ride from the mainland to Key West is around 110 miles, so plan accordingly.
The southernmost point in Florida, Key West, is only 90 miles north of Cuba and offers a laid-back atmosphere. This watersport hotspot is famous for its diving, snorkeling, and fishing. But you will also find a great location to kick the boots off, wander around, eat, drink and relax amongst the Cuban and Bahamian vibes.
There is so much to see and photograph on the route down, that you should plan for an all-day affair as you pass through Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, and into the Lower Keys.
Note: All indications are that Key West has recovered very well from the damage sustained from August to September 2017’s Hurricane Irma.
