This is the second installment in a new series where we highlight great can’t-miss routes around the world.
North Carolina: Asheville, NC, to Fancy Gap, VA
Blue Ridge Parkway is a much ride.
If you haven’t ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway, this is the meat of it. This route heads out of Asheville, NC, and heads to Fancy Gap, VA. The entire Parkway measures 469 miles connecting the Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National Park. The road runs along the ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains for most of its duration.
This is an incredibly scenic ride, but there are a few things you need to know. First, is that the speed limit along the entire BRP never exceeds 45 mph. Second, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the single-most visited park in the entire National Park system, meaning that it’s a good idea to visit when it isn’t peak season. Expect heavy automobile traffic during the summer and weekends. Lastly, but best, is the fact that there is no shortage of fantastic roads surrounding Asheville, including the Tail of the Dragon, which is only about an hour and a half west of Asheville.
Plenty of other fantastic routes shoot off of the BRP, so take the opportunity to get off the main road and explore. If you are looking for some awesome BBQ in Asheville, try 12 Bones Smokehouse (5 Foundy Street, Asheville, NC 28801), which is usually open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
